WESTport's medical gage division designs and manufactures both variable and fixed-limit gages for the medical device industry — with special emphasis on manufacturers of orthopedic and prosthetic devices. From Luer taper and hexalobe gages to bone plate pedestal gages, complex conical thread gages, and fully custom designs, our engineering team works alongside yours from first concept through final certification. Every gage is precision ground, hand lapped, and calibrated in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited (A2LA) laboratory, and ships with a Certificate of Accuracy traceable to NIST.

The WESTport medical gage line

Each gage is built to the specific demands of your application. Standard forms and proprietary geometries are both welcome — specify the standard, or send a drawing.

  • Hexalobe Gages — Plug & Ring. Go/No-Go gages for internal and external hexalobe drive recesses on surgical fasteners, bone screws, and implant components. Built to ISO 10664 or to your patented/proprietary profile.
  • Luer Taper Gages — ID & OD. Internal- and outside-diameter gages verifying the 6% Luer taper on syringes, catheters, IV sets, and connectors. Manufactured to ISO 594 and the current ISO 80369 small-bore connector standards.
  • Bone Plate Pedestal Gages. Custom fixed-limit gages that verify the features that matter on locking and cortical bone plates — screw-hole diameters, countersink geometry, plate thickness, and feature-to-feature relationships — catching problems before expensive 5-axis-milled parts become rejects.
  • Medical Thread Plug & Ring Gages. Fixed-limit Go/No-Go gages for internal and external medical threads, including the complex conical thread forms used in orthopedic and spinal fixation hardware. WESTport is among the foremost medical thread gage manufacturers in the country.
  • Variable Thread Inspection System. A system purpose-designed for the medical industry that delivers actual measurement data — not just pass/fail — on conical medical threads: pitch diameter related to standoff, and standoff related to pitch diameter, while reducing overall gage inventory.
  • Prototypes & Custom Medical Gages. Print-to-print gage design and build for new and existing devices — fixed-limit or variable, plug or ring, standard or special geometry — with engineering consultation from prototype through production.

What comes with every gage

  • Certificate of Accuracy, NIST-traceable — included with every gage, confirming it meets all applicable dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  • ISO/IEC 17025 Long Form Certification available — complete dimensional data, measurement uncertainty, and full NIST traceability; A2LA-accredited, on a 5–7 business day turnaround.
  • Hand lapped and polished, every gage — for superior accuracy, optimum surface finish, and maximum wear life, then inspected and certified in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Engineering support included — our design team is a direct extension of your quality group, from first specification review through production.

Medical gage questions

What types of medical gages do you make?

Hexalobe plug and ring gages, Luer taper ID and OD gages, bone plate pedestal gages, medical thread plug and ring gages, variable thread inspection systems, and fully custom/print-to-print gages — in both fixed-limit and variable designs.

What certification comes with a medical gage?

Every gage ships with a NIST-traceable Certificate of Accuracy. An ISO/IEC 17025 Long Form Certificate with complete dimensional data and measurement uncertainty is available with 5–7 business day turnaround.

What is a variable thread inspection system?

It provides actual measurement data on conical medical threads — relating pitch diameter to standoff (and vice versa) — rather than a simple pass/fail. It reduces gage inventory and is popular with orthopedic and prosthetic manufacturers.

Can you make custom or patented hexalobe sizes?

Yes. We build hexalobe plug and ring gages to ISO 10664 as well as custom and patented drive-recess geometries on surgical fasteners and implant components.

Which Luer taper standards do you support?

ISO 594 and ISO 80369. For new designs, ISO 80369 small-bore connector standards are replacing ISO 594 to prevent misconnection between different medical applications.

Can you gage a device still in development?

Yes. We provide prototype design, first-article support, and inspection-strategy consultation, then carry the gage from prototype to production as your device matures.

Can you calibrate our existing medical gages?

Yes — in our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab with typical 5–7 business day turnaround, plus free access to Metrology360, our online calibration-management platform.

Certificate of Accuracy vs. ISO 17025 Long Form — what's the difference?

The Certificate of Accuracy is a NIST-traceable pass certificate included with every gage. The ISO/IEC 17025 Long Form adds complete dimensional data, measurement uncertainty, and full traceability for regulated quality systems.
