The Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-220 is a new-generation portable surface roughness tester for accurate surface-finish measurement on the shop floor, in the inspection room or in the field.
The SJ-220 combines portability with touchscreen operation, wireless connectivity and advanced surface-finish analysis, and supports current standards including ISO 21920 and ISO 4287. Battery capacity of up to approximately 1,000 measurements per charge makes it practical for portable inspection work away from a bench.
Choosing a Drive Type
Standard is the conventional straight-ahead tracing configuration and the right choice for most surface-finish inspection.
Retractable Detector (SJ-220R) adds a mechanism that retracts the detector before the instrument is positioned on the workpiece, protecting the sensitive stylus during setup and fixturing. This is the configuration to specify when working with fixtures or automated measuring arrangements, or wherever accidental stylus contact during positioning is a real risk — a stylus is easy to damage and not cheap to replace.
Transverse Tracing (SJ-220S) moves the detector laterally rather than straight ahead, for applications where a conventional tracing direction is impractical. Mitutoyo specifically identifies axial roughness measurement on crankshafts and measurement of narrow areas including wire-EDM surfaces.
All three share the same SJ-220 measurement platform, touchscreen interface, resolution and standards support.
