Product Details

Flat anvils provide a broad, level seat for flat test specimens. Available in 1-1/2 in, 2-1/2 in, and 8 in diameters to suit part size and tester setup — a rigid, flat support surface is essential for repeatable Rockwell readings on plate, bar, and sheet stock.

The Rockwell method requires that a flat specimen be tested on a flat anvil whose bearing surface is smooth and perpendicular to the axis of the indenter. Choose a diameter that fully underlies the specimen so the part has complete, uncompromised support — this is what keeps the reading accurate. The bearing surface must be kept clean, smooth, and free of pits, deep scratches, or foreign material, and the anvil must be rigid enough that it will not deform during the test. Like all common support anvils, it should have a minimum hardness of 58 HRC (per ASTM E18).
