FH - Full Hole - Rotary Shouldered Connection Thread Plug and Ring Gages

Helpful Tips

FH - Full Hole - Rotary Shouldered Connection - Thread Plug and Ring Gages are used to measure the thread quality and dimensions of rotary shoulder connections that have the V-040 or V-050 thread forms.

  • Rotary shoulder connections are used to join drill pipe, drill collars, and other components of the drill string in oil and gas drilling operations3.
  • The gauging practice and thread inspection should conform to the requirements of API Spec 7-2, which specifies the design, manufacture, and inspection of rotary shoulder connections3.
  • The thread plug gage is used to check the internal thread of the box connection. The thread ring gage is used to check the external thread of the pin connection.
  • The thread plug and ring gages should be calibrated periodically using API reference masters, which are traceable to the API master gages.
  • The full hole thread plug and ring gages should be handled with care and stored in a clean, dry, and temperature-controlled environment to prevent damage and corrosion.
  • The gages should be cleaned and lubricated before and after each use, using a suitable thread compound that meets the requirements of API Spec 5B
  • Both the thread plug and thread ring gage should be inserted or screwed into the connection with a smooth and steady motion without forcing or jamming which can cause damage to the gages
  • The gages should be checked for wear and damage regularly and replaced as needed.
  • The thread plug and ring gage should be marked with the size, type, and serial number of the connection. In addition, the date of calibration and the name of the manufacturer should be included.
